Esipflox eye drop is a prescription eye and ear drop used to treat bacterial infections such as corneal ulcers and eye surface infections, especially those caused by tough-to-treat bacteria like pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is also helpful for treating outer ear infections (otitis externa) when there is strong inflammation and the bacteria are known to respond to ciprofloxacin. This medicine contains ciprofloxacin as the active ingredient, which works by killing bacteria.
It does this by stopping the bacteria from repairing their DNA, which is necessary for them to grow and survive. Once the bacteria are eliminated, the infection can begin to heal. Since it is used directly in the eye or ear, very little of the medicine gets into the rest of the body, so serious side effects are rare.
Common side effects may include mild irritation, redness, or a metallic taste. Rarely, a white deposit may form in the eye with frequent use; this is not harmful and usually resolves on its own. Do not use Esipflox eye drop if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin.
If you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing, discontinue use of the medicine and seek medical attention immediately. Follow your doctor’s instructions on how to use the drops. Wash your hands before applying, and avoid touching the bottle tip to your eye or ear.
Do not wear contact lenses during treatment. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or using other medicines, let your doctor know. Although alcohol does not interact with the drops, you should avoid driving until any blurred vision goes away after applying them.
Store Esipflox eye drop in a cool, dry place, keeping it out of the reach of children. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to your next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.
In case of accidental overdose or ingestion, contact a doctor immediately. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, please notify your doctor, as you may require a different treatment.
There is limited or no data on the use of Esipflox eye drop in pregnant women. Esipflox eye drop should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk after its oral administration. It is unknown whether ciprofloxacin is excreted into human milk following topical ocular or otic administration. Caution should be exercised when Esipflox eye drop is administered to nursing mothers.
Temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances may impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. If blurred vision occurs upon administration, the patient must wait until the vision clears before operating machinery or driving.
No known interactions with alcohol.
Talk to your doctor if
As Esipflox eye drop is meant for external application, instances of overdose are unlikely. However, in the event of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital. If you have applied an excess amount, please remove the surplus medicine with tissue or cotton.
If you miss a dose of your medication, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra medication to make up for the missed dose.
Esipflox eye drop works by killing the bacteria that cause infections. It does this by blocking an important enzyme that the bacteria need to grow and repair their DNA. Without this enzyme, the bacteria can not survive, so the infection clears up. This makes ciprofloxacin effective in treating bacterial infections in the eyes or ears.
No. These drops work only for bacterial infections. They are not effective against viral or fungal infections of the eye.
Yes, if both eyes are infected, your doctor has prescribed it for both. Use a separate drop for each eye to prevent the infection from spreading.
Safety in children under 1 year is not well established. Use only under medical supervision.
