Mebeverine and chlordiazepoxide are the active ingredients of Cizaspa-X Tablet. Mebeverine is a medication that reduces the motility of the gut by inhibiting a process called peristalsis. Peristalsis is the physiological process by which the food is transported through the various regions of the gut as digestion takes place. For this to occur, the smooth muscles of the gut contract and relax rhythmically. In IBS, this produces crampy, spasmodic pain. Mebeverine is an antispasmodic agent that causes relaxation of the smooth muscles, decreasing this forward propulsive peristalsis and reducing abdominal pain. It belongs to a group of agents called anticholinergics. Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine or tranquilliser that has calming, sedative effects on the brain. Studies have shown a direct correlation between increased stress levels, anxiety, & depression and IBS. Increased stress levels cause increased gut motility. Chlordiazepoxide acts as an antianxiety, stress-relieving medication. It does so by acting on certain brain pathways to increase the levels of a chemical called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter, which means it is a chemical that relays information along brain pathways. GABA’s effects are predominantly inhibitory, hence increasing its levels produces the desirable effects in decreasing anxiety.
Increased stress levels increase the motility of the digestive tract resulting in more pain in IBS. Cizaspa-X Tablet contains an antianxiety agent called chlordiazepoxide that can aid in calming and decreasing the effects of stress. It also has an antispasmodic agent called mebeverine to reduce the pain.
Cizaspa-X Tablet is best taken 20-30 mins before food intake for optimal efficacy.
Abruptly stopping Cizaspa-X Tablet may lead to withdrawal effects. Talk to your doctor about discontinuing this medication. They can gradually decrease the dose, thereby preventing undesirable symptoms.
