The Adlisc HME Filter - Adult is a medical device designed for individuals with a tracheostomy. Its primary function is to humidify and warm the air inspired by the patient, thereby mimicking the natural conditioning of the upper airway. This process is crucial for maintaining airway health and patient comfort, particularly for those requiring long-term tracheostomy care.
The device operates by capturing heat and moisture present in the patient's exhaled breath. Upon subsequent inhalation, this retained heat and moisture are released back into the inspired air, contributing to a more physiological breathing environment and mitigating the adverse effects of dry, unconditioned air on the respiratory tract.
The mechanism of action involves a specialized wet paper element within the filter. This material is engineered to provide an extensive surface area, optimizing the efficiency of heat and moisture exchange. As air passes over this surface during exhalation, water vapor and thermal energy are absorbed.
During inhalation, the inspired air traverses the same material, picking up the stored moisture and warmth. This continuous cycle helps to prevent the drying and irritation of the tracheal mucosa, which can lead to complications such as increased mucus production, airway obstruction, and infection. The filter's design aims to restore a degree of natural airway function for individuals with a tracheostomy.
Key features of the Adlisc HME Filter - Adult include its transparent housing, which facilitates straightforward visual inspection of the device and the airway connection. A built-in filter guard is incorporated to help prevent the ingress of contaminants from the external environment. Furthermore, the filter is equipped with an additional port.
This port allows for the performance of suctioning procedures without the necessity of disconnecting the HME filter itself, thereby minimizing airway disruption and maintaining the integrity of the humidification and filtration process. The device connects via a standard 15F connector.
This HME filter is intended for use by adult patients who have undergone a tracheostomy procedure. It is also utilized by medical professionals, such as respiratory therapists, nurses, and physicians, who manage the care of these patients. Caregivers may also be involved in the application and monitoring of the device.
Typical applications include the routine management of patients with tracheostomies in hospital settings, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare environments. It is particularly beneficial for patients experiencing symptoms of airway dryness, increased mucus, or discomfort related to breathing through a tracheostomy tube.
The Adlisc HME Filter - Adult has dimensions of 46mm x 34mm and a weight of 9.5g. It is designed to accommodate tidal volumes ranging from 200ml to 1500ml, with a moisture output of 25mg at 500ml tidal volume.
The filtration efficiency is rated at BFE 99.9999% and VFE 99.9999%.
Important usage notes include ensuring the packaging is intact before use, as damaged packaging should not be employed. The device is intended for single use and should not be resterilized. It should be stored in a cool, dry location and kept out of reach of children.
The transparent housing allows for easy visual monitoring of the device and the patient's airway.
