Learn about laser surgery for wet macular degeneration (AMD), including how it works, who is a candidate, and what to expect during and after the procedure.
Macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects millions worldwide, including many in India. It primarily impacts the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. AMD can lead to significant vision loss, impacting daily life. While there are two main types, dry AMD and wet AMD, laser surgery is a treatment option specifically for the wet form of the disease.
Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that causes damage to the macula. The macula is a small, highly sensitive area at the back of the eye that allows us to see fine details. When the macula is damaged, your central vision can become blurred or lost, while your peripheral (side) vision remains unaffected.
Laser surgery for wet AMD aims to stop or slow down the damage caused by these abnormal, leaky blood vessels. The goal is not to restore lost vision but to preserve the vision you currently have and prevent further deterioration. The laser works by sealing off these abnormal blood vessels, preventing them from leaking fluid or blood into the macula.
There are two main types of laser treatments used for wet AMD:
