How Acupressure Helps Relieve Constipation Acupressure works by targeting specific points that are believed to be connected to the digestive system and the organs responsible for bowel function. When these points are stimulated, they can help: Promote Peristalsis: Acupressure can stimulate peristalsis, which is the wave-like muscular contractions of the intestines that propel stool through the digestive tract. Key Acupressure Points for Constipation Relief Several acupressure points have been identified as particularly effective for relieving constipation. These points can be stimulated using your fingers or thumbs. It's important to apply firm, consistent pressure for 1 to 3 minutes on each point, using a circular motion or steady pressure. If you experience any discomfort, reduce the pressure or stop. 1. San Jiao 6 (SJ6) - The Inner Gate Location: This point is located on the inner side of your forearm, about three finger-widths above your wrist crease. You can find it by placing three fingers on your wrist crease and moving up your arm. It's on the posterior (back) side of the forearm, between the two bones. Benefits: SJ6 is commonly used to stimulate the 'lower jiao,' which encompasses the intestines, kidneys, and bladder. It is believed to help regulate bowel movements and relieve constipation. How to Apply: Use your thumb or index finger to apply firm, circular pressure for 1 to 3 minutes. You can do this on both arms. 2. Stomach 25 (ST25) - The Celestial Shumen Location: These points are located on your abdomen, about two finger-widths to the right and left of your navel (belly button). Benefits: ST25 is a powerful point for balancing the digestive system. It is known to help with both constipation and diarrhea, promoting regularity and relieving abdominal discomfort. How to Apply: Gently press on these points with your index or middle finger, or your thumb, using a circular motion for 1 to 3 minutes. You can stimulate both points simultaneously or one at a time. 3. Spleen 15 (SP15) - The Great White Location: SP15 is located on the abdomen, about four finger-widths to the right and left of your navel. It is situated on the same horizontal line as ST25 but further out. Benefits: This point is used to stimulate peristalsis and enhance the effects of ST25. It is particularly helpful for relieving bloating and promoting bowel movements. How to Apply: Apply firm pressure with your thumb or index finger in a circular motion for 1 to 3 minutes. You can work on both sides. 4. Large Intestine 4 (LI4) - The Hegu Point Location: This is one of the most commonly used acupressure points. It is located in the fleshy webbing between your thumb and index finger on the back of your hand. To find it, bring your thumb and index finger together; the highest point of the muscle bulge is LI4. Benefits: LI4 is known for its ability to relieve pain and promote the flow of qi throughout the body, including the digestive system. It is effective for relieving constipation and headaches. How to Apply: Press firmly on this point with the thumb and index finger of your opposite hand, using a circular motion for 1 to 3 minutes. Repeat on the other hand. Important Note: LI4 should be avoided during pregnancy as it can potentially induce labor. 5. Stomach 36 (ST36) - The Leg Three Miles Location: ST36 is located on the lower leg, about four finger-widths below the kneecap and one finger-width to the outside of the shinbone (tibia).
