Living with Type 2 diabetes for over 17 years, my journey began at the age of 29. For 15 of those years, I cycled through diabetes education programs and various diets, yet my blood sugar control remained stubbornly inconsistent. I used to believe that diet accounted for about 90% of blood sugar fluctuations, with exercise, medication, and other factors making up the remaining 10%. This belief system, common in many diabetes management approaches, often leads to a restrictive and guilt-ridden experience.
A significant shift occurred when I discovered a resource that proposed there are actually 42 factors influencing blood sugar levels. This opened my eyes to the fact that by solely focusing on 'what I ate' after a high glucose reading, I was ignoring a multitude of other potential influences. This realization was profound and paved the way for a more holistic approach to managing my diabetes.
The integration of intuitive eating with diabetes management has been transformative. It has reshaped my entire perception of living with Type 2 diabetes, fostering a sense of hope and control that was previously elusive. Connecting with my nutritionist, Lauren, and others living with diabetes over the past year has reinforced this positive outlook.
One of the first steps I took after my diagnosis was to educate myself. The classes I attended were heavily focused on diet: identifying 'good' foods (vegetables, proteins) and 'bad' foods (everything else). Having struggled with dieting since my teenage years, including numerous Weight Watchers meetings, the prospect of further dietary restriction felt disheartening. Despite this, I attended a refresher course that reiterated the message: certain foods made me sick, and avoiding others would be beneficial. I would meticulously monitor my glucose levels and vow not to eat until they dropped below a certain point. However, this approach rarely went as planned. I learned that I needed a supportive guide to help me channel the basic understanding of caring for my body into a practice of eating when I felt hungry.
Numerous diets claim to 'cure' diabetes, but the reality is that no single diet can achieve this. While dietary changes can temporarily help manage blood sugar levels, they are often unsustainable and can lead to a cycle of restriction and rebound. The focus should be on creating a balanced and enjoyable eating pattern that supports overall health and well-being, rather than adhering to a rigid set of rules.
My previous belief that diet was the sole determinant of blood sugar levels was a significant oversimplification. Factors such as stress, sleep, hydration, physical activity, hormonal changes, and even the time of day can all impact glucose levels. Recognizing these diverse influences allows for a more nuanced and effective approach to diabetes management. Instead of solely blaming food, I learned to consider the interplay of these various factors.
The constant pressure to eat 'correctly' can lead to immense guilt and shame, especially when blood sugar levels are not within the desired range. Intuitive eating encourages a non-judgmental approach to food, allowing individuals to explore their preferences and needs without self-recrimination. This shift in mindset is crucial for fostering a healthier relationship with food and reducing the emotional burden of diabetes.
The goal of diabetes management should be to build a sustainable lifestyle that incorporates healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, stress management, and adequate sleep. Focusing on long-term well-being, rather than short-term dietary fixes, is key to achieving lasting health outcomes. Intuitive eating, by its very nature, promotes this sustainable approach by encouraging mindful choices and self-compassion.
